House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) castigated President Trump Friday for withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement, saying it dishonored God and questioning how he could do such a thing to his grandchildren.
Pelosi noted that last month Pope Francis gave Trump his encyclical on the dangers of climate change and the need for the world to address it. Trump said Thursday in his withdrawal announcement that the deal hurt American workers.
“The Bible tells us that to minister to the needs of God’s creation is an act of worship,” Pelosi said.
“To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us, and that is just what we are doing by walking away from this accord.”
Pelosi said she wanted to know, as a mother and a grandmother, how Trump could explain his decision to his own grandchildren.
“How is he ever going to explain to his grandchildren what he did to the air they breathe, assuming they breathe air?” she said.
“And I have to assume that is the case.
We all do.”
